The following written by Helen Bliss as told by her mother Grace (Simmons) Bliss c. 1955: Orlando Simmons grew up at Kingfield spending most of his time in the woods. In 1884 he went west to Nebraska. A year later Eva, known as "Addie," followed with the three children. They farmed one year in eastern Nebraska then moved about twenty miles south of Chadron, Nebraska in Dawes County where they farmed until 1899. Then they joined a wagon train for Idaho with eight other families, 13 wagons, 52 persons and 52 horses. Leaving Nebraska in the second week of June they traveled about seven weeks, driving the wagons for 5 days, wash and bake one day, rest and worship on the seventh day. The first week in September [?August] they settled about six miles from Soldier, Idaho [nearest town is now Fairfield]. The main street of Soldier was on the Oregon Trail. When the railroad went by south of Soldier, the people moved to the railroad and first tried to call the new town South Soldier but the Postal Service objected so it's called Fairfield. In 1919 they moved to a small [13 acre] farm five miles west of Salem, Oregon where they lived with daughter, Grace and granddaughter Helen Bliss. Both Orlando and Eva died on the farm and are buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetary at Salem. They were always active in their local church wherever they were; in Salem they belonged to the Summit Methodist Church. They had eight children, the first three born in Maine, the others in Nebraska.
