From Bessie Simmons as told by her grandfather, Daniel Simmons in 1898: "Moses Simmons was born and married in Readfield. In 1820 he moved to Kingfield on what is known as the Peterson Place clearing most of the farm. He lived there until his death in 1841. He died of Billious fever and was sick only a short time. He was a medium sized man weighing about 180 lbs. He served a short time in the war of 1812; taught school at one time; was selectman of Kingfield for several years; and was deputy sheriff one year. He was "inclined toward" the Congregationalist Church and was a Whig in politics.
His wife Betsey was a small light complected woman. She came from a large family in Readfield. Moses and Betsey are buried at Kingfield." |

On May 19,1855 Betsey as widow of Moses Simmons made a "declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act of March 3,1855 - -" etc. She "- - - declares that she is the widow of Moses Simmons, deceased, who was a private in the company commanded by Captain George Waugh in the regiment of militia commanded by Colonel Ellis Sweet in the war with Great Britian declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812.
That her said husband was drafted or ordered out with the company at Readfield, Mass. on the 11th day of Sept. 1814 for the term of fourty days and served for about that term of time at Edgecomb & Wiscassett and was honorably discharged at Wiscassett on or about the 20th of October 1814 as will appear by the muster rolls of said company. - - -" with a neat hand signature of Betsey Simmons and Statements by James H Fillebrown and William Fulton, witnessed and notarized by G. Moore, J.P. and Geo A Hobbs, Clerk of Court. On both a Pay Roll and a Muster Roll he appears with the rank of Corpl. and officially was credited with service from Sept 12 to Sept 25, 1814, with 16 days time of service and travel, and $6.92 for pay and clothing. Moses and Betsey had 10 children, the first five born at Readfield, the last five born at Kingfield. |
