| From Bessie Simmons as told to her by her grandfather Daniel Simmons in 1898 - "Ichabod Simmons lived his early life in Mass. then moved to Readfield, Maine. In 1823 or '24 he moved to Kingfield, Maine where he spent the rest of his life, dying there in 1833. Ichabod and wife Urania are buried in the upper Cem. at Kingfield." In his declaration for pension in 1832 Ichabod says that he has a small farm and is considerably in debt, and depends principally upon his labor for support, and is rendered infirm and decrepid by the rheumatism --. Ichabod was inscribed on the Roll of Maine for a Pension Based on Rev. War Service at the rate of 36 dollars and 98 cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March 1831. He claimed and received credit for Revolutionary War Service in The Massachusetts Line as follows: Sept. and Oct., 1778, 33 days (he originally claimed 40 days to include the walk home) as a private in Capt. Nehemiah Allen's co., Col. Theophilus Cotten's regt. engaged in a secret expedition to the State of Rhode Island; May or June 1779, enlisted as private for four months in Capt. Clifts co., Col. Sproutes regt. under command of Gen Sullivan to Rhode Island and discharged at Providence, R.I. after serving his full enlistment; In June 1780 he enlisted as a private for six months in Capt. Haskells co., Col. Bradfords command, 14th regt. of the Massachusetts Line and served this time principally in the Jerseys and was one of the soldiers who guarded Andre to the gallows when he was executed and was discharged at West Point having served out his enlistment, most of the time as a Sargent. [Ed. note: Andre was the British spy involved in Benedict Arnolds betrayal. Also note that there is considerable inconsistantcy in the above record (Nat'l Arch. #W24971) and the publication, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, yet enough agreement exists to confirm the basic service.] We are certain that this service pertains to our Ichabod Jr because the Nat'l Arch. record includes Urania's application for widows pension based on the same service. All of which resulted in a pension which he received for only the last few months of his life, most of the money, $92.45, was a lump sum payment retroactive to March 4,1831. Urania later had a widows pension at the rate of $37 per annum. They had six children as copied from the Ichabod Simmons Bible which was in the possession of his great granddaughter Mary (Simmons) Birdsall of Danvers, Mass. sometime prior to c.1960: | ||||||||||||
