| Ichabod Simmons was born on October 18,1722 at Duxbury; neither his death date nor place is known. Because all his children were born at Duxbury we assume that he spent his life there probably farming. He was married on Dec. 8,1743 to Lydia Soule daughter of Josiah and Lydia (Delano) Soule. She was born Oct. 2,1719 at Duxbury and died March 3,1779 aged 60, "widow of Ichabod Simmons." [ Ed. Note: We must pause here to remark that there is much confusion, and serious error among the several secondary information sources, among which are: the Mayflower Index, the DAR Index, Simmons (1930), Delano (1899) and all other earlier writers who were unaware either of the second Ichabod Simmons (below) OR of his removal to Maine about 1783. Evidently they couldn't find him and so improperly interpreted his activities. There two primary sets of facts and errors to resolve: 1. The status of Mrs. Mercy Sprague. Because of their several ages, marriage, birth and death dates, it is most likely that Lydia (Soule) Simmons died as the WIFE of Ichabod Simmons above and that she was the mother of all of his children. Mercy Sprague would then be the wife of the elder Ichabod, above, in his old age and indeed died his widow. Also, we have no record of her in our private family records, thus, she is almost certainly NOT the wife of Ichabod Jr below. Under the circumstances of their times the elder Ichabod above could not have left TWO widows. 2. We have knowledge of four Revolutionary Service records credited to Ichabod Simmons (Simons) of Duxbury and Plymouth Co. IF the senior Ichabod Simmons had Rev. Service, it must have been that of "Private, Capt. James Webb's co., Col. Henry Sherburne's regt.; muster roll dated Camp at Rhode Island, Aug. 21,1778; enlisted Sept. 1?,1777; enlistment, 3 years." The other three periods of service are claimed and credited to Ichabod Jr. below; see Maine Register and Nat'l Archives #W24971. We have no private family stories of the elder Ichabods Rev. Service, however, others have so claimed. There is enough ambiguity to be skeptical. ] There is record of Ichabod Simmons marrying Aug. 1781 to Mrs. Mercy Sprague (widow of Phineas Sprague). Mercy Simmons died Oct. 29,1815 in her 89th year, "the widow of Ichabod Simmons and Phineas Sprague." At least there is agreement in Simmons (1930) and V.R. Duxbury that Ichabod and Lydia had six children. The Mayflower Index includes the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th; Abigail, #4, may have died young and Ichabod Jr, #6, moved to Readfield, Maine soon after he married. | ||||||||||
