Misc. Notes
Matthew Mayhew, son of Thomas of Tisbury, was born about 1550 and resided in Tisbury Parish. He is described in his will as "yeoman" ie. legally next in rank under "gentleman"; being descended from the line of a third son he had not the quality attached to the eldest branch. Nevertheless he was a man of substance and left to his heirs an estate of consideable value.
From the lists of marriages in the Tisbury Parish Register we have " Octo. 2,1587, Mathew Maow and Ales [Alice] Barter." Alice Barter was almost certainly the daughter of Edward and Edith Barter of Haxton, Wiltshire, of the parish of Fydleton and the granddaughter of James and Margaret Barter of Fovent, Wilts.
Up to Matthews generation the known Mayhew history is English. From thence we follow the family to America. The Parish Register of Tisbury lists the baptisms of the children.9
