Capt. Stephen Greenleaf was baptized on August 10,1628 at St. Margaret's Ipswich, England and died December 1,1690, drowned at Cape Breton.
He came to America with his parents and lived in Newbury, Massachusetts all his life although he was one of the purchasers of Nantucket Island with Tristram Coffin. He was freeman March 23,1677, Deputy to General Court, Served as Lieutenant in Newbury Military Company and as Captain in the disastrous expedition sent to Quebec in 1690 by Sir Wm Phipps.
He married first Elizabeth Coffin on Nov. 13,1651, daughter of Tristram and Dionis (Stevens) Coffin of Newbury, Mass. who was the mother of all his children. She was born in 1631 and died on November 19,1678, the same day her youngest daughter died. He married second, Mrs. Esther (Weare) Swett, widow of Benjamin Swett and daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Weare. She was born about 1629 and died Jan. 16,1718. |
