From Banks (1925)9 we learn that Rev. John Smith is the ancestor of the second Smith family line on Martha's Vineyard. He was a resident of Barnstable, Mass. before 1643.
He was prominent in church affairs and controversy. In Sept 1661 he led in organizing a church which a council refused to approve. He accepted a call to be pastor at Sandwich where he served from 1673 to 1689.
He married June 13,1643 to Susanna Hinckley, the daughter of Samuel Hinckley and sister of Gov. Thomas Hinckley of Plymouth Colony. They had 13 children.
