Johann Georg Streib (Jr), called George, was buried in the family cemetary across the road from the farm at Leona, Kansas. J. Geo. Streib, first known in America as George Stripe (see Streib family Bible in possesion of Geo 'Junior' 1983). He paid a fellow ship passenger (25 cents?) to vouch his name was Stripe as an immagrant in order to break the trail of the George Streib who had left Germany to escape the draft about 1850. On coming to America, George Steib took up residence in Cincinatti, Ohio. After he had established himself, he sent for his betrothed, and on December 15,1891(??) he married Miss C. Elisabetha Stadler at Cincinatti, Ohio.
Before the Civil War, the family moved near Newcastle, Indiana where they husbanded their resources and bought a small farm on which they prospered. Then, with three other families, they made an 800 mile trip of 63 days in four heavily laiden covered wagons to a new home 14 miles west of Troy, Kansas and north of present Leona, Kansas. |
