| How's this for a Rube-Goldberg? The main bearing needs to be pressed onto the output shaft. I don't have a machine press nor a bearing press, so I made do with a couple pipe clamps. The instructions from David spoke of polishing down the output shaft such that the bearing pressed on / off by hand. I had taken the shaft over to a friend who had a lathe to spin the shaft. We tried polishing it, but geve up after a while. "Polish" must mean emery cloth, because standard rouge on a buffing wheel sure doesn't cut much metal. I figured I'd rather have to deal with a press than ruin a shaft with too much removal, so we quit. The "press" shown here is a 16" piece of 2" black pipe. This pushes fine on the inner race of the bearing. A piece of angle iron and the two clamps make a press. Four hands makes it easier to do, and the bearing went on quite smoothly. I reused the old bearings as they looked pretty good. Again, the large rebuild kit would have included new bearings. |
